(iv) Affrication
The voiceless unaspirated dental stop त् /t/ changes into its affricate voiceless
or voiced counterpart च् /c/ or ज् /j/ in contact with affricate ones, as shown in (19a-e):
(19) a. बात् /bɑt/ matter + िचत /cit/ mind = बािeत /bɑccit/ conversation: त् /t/ +
च् /c/ = fच् /cc/.
b. सात् /sɑt/ seven + जन /jʌn/ person = साgन /sɑjjʌn/ seven people: त् /t/
+ ज् /j/ = g् /jj/.
d. पात् /pɑt/ leaf + झर /ȷ ̈ ʌr/ fall = पhझर /pʌjȷ ̈ ʌr/ autumn/fall: त् /t/ + झ् /ȷ ̈ / =
hझ /jȷ ̈ /, with vowel raising in the first segment.
e. पात् /pɑt/ leaf + चर /cʌr/ graze = पeर /pʌccʌr/ leaf-eater: त् /t/ + च् /c/ =
fच् /cc/, with vowel raising in the first segment.
(v) Deaspiration
The final aspirated or breathy phoneme of the preceding segment is
deaspirated and changed into a unaspirated or a voiced one in regressive assimilation
in Bhojpuri, as shown in (20a-i):
(20) a. माझ् /mɑȷ ̈ / middle + घर /ɡ ̈ ʌr/ house = माhघर /mɑjɡ ̈ ʌr/ middle room/
passage: झ् /ȷ ̈ / + घ् /ɡ ̈ / = hघ् /jɡ ̈ /.
b. आध् /ɑd ̤ / half + थान /tʰɑn/ whole = आUथान /ɑdtʰɑn/ 'a half': ध /d ̤ / + थ /tʰ/
= Uथ् /dtʰ/.
c. घाघ /ɡ ̈ ɑɡ ̈ / cunning + दास /dɑs/ slave = घाWदास /ɡ ̈ ɑɡdɑs/ a famous agro-
scientist: घ् /ɡ ̈ / + द् /d/ = Wद /ɡd/.
d. लाभ् /lɑb ̤ / profit + दर /dʌr/ rate = लाSदर /lɑbdʌr/ rate of profit: भ् /b ̤ / +
द् /d/ = Sद् /bd/.
e. आठ् / ɑʈʰ/ eight + पाकड़ /pɑkʌɽ/ doer = अ"पाकड़ /ʌʈpɑkʌɽ/ 'naughty': ठ् /ʈʰ/ +
प् /p/ = "प् /ʈp/.
f. काठ् /k ɑʈʰ/ wood + फोरवा /pʰorwɑ/ breaker = क"फोवा+ /kʌʈpʰorwɑ/
'woodpecker': ठ् /ʈʰ/ + फ् /pʰ/ = "फ /ʈpʰ/.
g. बाघ् /bɑɡ ̈ / tiger + चाल /cɑl/ walk = बाWचाल /bɑɡcɑl/ 'tiger-walk': घ् /ɡ ̈ / +
च् /c/ = Wच् /ɡc/.
