Or, the final न् /n/ may be lost nasalizing the preceding vowel. This process

does not seem natural in Bhojpui. But some loanword from Hindi-Urdu present this
                           character, as shown in (37a-c).

                           5.4 Epenthesis

Epenthesis is the insertion of a segment.
                           5.4.1 Vowel insertion

There are some natural environments in Bhojpuri for vowel insertion under
process of epenthesis, as shown in (38a-c):

                             (38) a. काठ् /kɑʈʰ/ ‘wood’ + कुआँ /kuɑ/ ‘well’ = क"कुइआँ /kʌʈkuiɑ/ ‘wooden well’: ठ्
                                                                                      ̃
                                                              ̃
                                    /ʈʰ/ + क् /k/ = "क् /ʈk/, with vowel raising in the preceding segment and
medial insertion of close-front vowel इ /i/ in the succeeding segment.

                                 b. उwर /uttʌr/ ‘north’ + आरी /ɑri/ ‘boundary’ = उतरवारी /utʌrwɑri/ ‘northern’:

insertion of व् /w/ between the two segments.

                                 c. दिxखन /dʌkkʰin/ 'south' + आरी /ɑri/ ‘boundary’ = दिxखनवारी /dʌkkʰinwɑri/

'southern': insertion of व् /w/ between the two segments.
                           5.4.2 Consonant insertion

A consonant may be inserted to break up unacceptable vowel clusters. The

insertion of voiced unaspirated palatal and bilabial glides य् /y/ and व् /w/ has already
been discussed. But Bhojpuri has its own usage of consonant insertion, mainly in

counting over a hundred, as shown in (39a-c):
                             (39) a. दु /du/ ‘two’ + उwर /uttʌr/ ‘post’ = 7दलोwर /dilottʌr/ ‘two and’

                                 b. तीन /tinʌ/ ‘three’ + उwर /uttʌr/ ‘post’ = ितलोwर /tilottʌr/ ‘three and’

                                 c. चार /cɑrʌ/ ‘four’ + उwर /uttʌr/ ‘post’ = चलोwर /cʌlottʌr/ ‘four and’

                                                                    120
