2.2 Bhojpuri language and its dialects
Bhojpuri is mainly spoken in Central Tarai belt of Nepal. It is spoken in Sarlahi,
Rautahat, Bara, Parsa, Chitwan, Nawalparasi and Rupandehi districts as well as in the
adjacent Indian territories of western Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Bhojpuri
speakers are also found in Morang and Sunsari and all over Nepal except Manag,
Rukum, Dolpa and Kalikot districts as per the Public Census, 2001.
The dialects of Bhojpuri are classified in different ways. But the limitation of this
research is Nepalese Bhojpuri area, geographically two districts Bara and Parsa which
is the central Bhojpuri region. To explain dialects of Bhojpuri few other places are
also included to some extent. Nawalparasi and Rupandehi districts are western
Bhojpuri region, Jamuni river eastward in Bara up to Bakeya river in Rautahat is for
mid eastern Bhojpuri region's dialect and Bakeya eastward up to Sarlahi is the eastern
Bhojpuri region.
If we talk about Bhojpuri dialect on the basis of communities, then the Tharu
community speaks Tharu Bhojpuri. Apart from this Sheikh community of Muslims in
the central and western part of Rautahat speaks Sheikh Dialect.
This research is limited to the central dialect of Bhojpuri which is not influenced by
Awadhi or Maithili. The central dialect is spoken in Bara and Parsa districts. The
