1.2 Statement of the problem

The verb morphology of any language is the core area of grammar. Thus, the basic

problem of this research is to study the verb morphology of Bhojpuri. Specifically,
this research is oriented to following problems:

a. How tense, aspect, mood and modality are expressed in Bhojpuri?

b. How is agreement system in terms of number, person, gender and
honorificity are realized in Bhojpuri verbs?

c. What are the main copulas in Bhojpuri?
d. What are the causativization and passivization processes in Bhojpuri?

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this research is to analyze the morphology of Bhojpuri verbs.

More specifically, the objectives of the study are:

a. To analyze the verb forms of Bhojpuri according to tense, aspect, mood and
modality.

b. To analyze the agreement systems in Bhojpuri according to number, person,
gender and honorificity.

c. To analyze the main copulas in Bhojpuri.
d. To find out the causativization and passivization processes in Bhojpuri.

1.4 Review of Literature

The verb morphology of Bhojpuri has probably not been carried out in Nepal till now.
Although some linguists have done some research in the Bhojpuri language but these

researches are not related solely with verb morphology of Bhojpuri. Though the
analysis of Bhojpuri grammar is available, they do not describe the Bhojpuri verb

morphology in detail.

Grierson (1903) has given general description of Bhojpuri with grammatical
description. He has briefly described the auxiliary verb and verb substance. He has

also discussed the finite verb of Bhojpuri in brief. Likewise he has given brief
description of some irregular verbs. Overall he has covered general and brief

description about verb morphology.
