Page 20 - Bhojpuri Verb Morphology
P. 20

Ojha (1915) has written the grammar of Bhojpuri, which covers the verb morphology

of Bhojpuri in short. He has mentioned the forms of tense in Bhojpuri.

Shukla (1981) describes the Bhojpuri, spoken in north Western Uttarpradesh of India.
He has described the structural sketch of the inflected forms of the basic paradigm of

the Bhojpuri verbs and their derived causative forms. He has described the basic
paradigm for different modes of Bhojpuri and its subsets. He has shown how tenses
are applied in Bhojpuri verbs. He has also described the participles used in Bhojpuri.

Compound verbs in Bhojpuri have been also described in this grammar. Besides
these, he has given a brief description of irregular verbs and has shown its variant

base forms. Shukla's Bhojpuri grammar covers the verb morphology in detail in some
extent but there are no examples in full sentences and in required length. He has

described the verbs paradigm in limited or brief description, which is not enough to
describe whole verb morphology of Bhojpuri.

Ashka et al. (2059 and 2060 B.S.) has described Bhojpuri grammar for secondary

level students covering verb morphology briefly.

Sharma and Ashka (2064 B.S.) have covered the verb morphology as per the tense,
aspect and mood as well as the changes occurred in verb according to number and

person of the subjects in Bhojpuri sentences. But they haven’t analyzed verb
morphology in particular with linguistic tools.

Thakur (2005) has given the sociolinguistic situation of Bhojpuri in Nepal. But it has

not described the verb morphology of Bhojpuri in detail with linguistic tools.

                    1.5 Research Methodology

The study is fully based on the data taken from the Bhojpuri native speakers from
Bara and Parsa districts. Data collection with the native speakers is the primary source

for the research. Some of the data have been included from the secondary sources
such as from libraries, internet, books, periodicals, reports, magazines, journals,

newspapers and some other related texts. Depending on the collected data, this
research is more descriptive. In order to carry out the descriptive approach, the

framework is based on basic linguistic theory. Following techniques and tools are
                    used to collect data:

                        a. Primary resources: The primary resources of data collection are oral texts

and collecting data from different native speakers.
