                    4.3 Mood and modality

In this section we deal with mood and modality in Bhojpuri. In this section we will
discuss about different categories of moods and then modality.

                    4.3.1 Moods

Mood describes the speaker's attitude toward a situation, including the speaker's belief

in its reality, or likelihood. It sometimes describes the speaker's estimation of the
relevance of the situation to him/herself (Payne 1997:244).

Mood characterizes the actuality of an event by comparing the event world(s) to a

reference, termed the actual world (Shopen 1985:241).

Being an Indo-Aryan language, in Bhojpuri different kind of moods is distinguished.
Five types of moods are morphologically distinguished in Bhojpuri: declarative

(indicative), interrogative, imperative, optative and conditional. Inflection for person,
number and honorificity and tenses is retained necessarily in declarative and

interrogative mood. Imperative is in non-past.

                    a. Declarative (Indicative) mood

Declarative mood is indicated by the regular form of the verb, used in statement or in
assertive sentences. It asserts the truth value of propositions. This is considered to be

the basic mood in Bhojpuri and they are in basic word order SOV (subject, object and
