(vi) Conversion of adverbs into adjectives
The manner adverbs in the finite clause are converted into adjectives in
nominalized clause, as shown in (23a-b).
(23) a. Finite clause
घर िनमन से पोतऽ ।
ɡ ̈ ʌr nimʌn se potʌ
ɡ ̈ ʌr nimʌn se pot-ʌ
house good with paint-IMP.MH
'Paint the house well.' (09.395)
b. Nominalized clause
िनमन पोताई जे घर खोजता ।
nimʌn potɑi je ɡ ̈ ʌr kʰojʌtɑ
nimʌn potɑi je ɡ ̈ ʌr kʰoj-ʌt bɑ
good paint SUB house search-IMPF 3SG.PRES
'Good paint that the house needs...'
We see that the adverb िनमन से /nimʌn se/ 'well' in (23a) is converted into the
adjective िनमन /nimʌn/ 'good' in (23b).
Thus, it is to be noted that the process of nominalization in Bhojpuri
characterizes the syntactic adjustments from the finite verbal-clause prototype to the
nominal (NP) prototype as described in Givόn (2001b:25).
e) Functional dimensions of nominalization
An extensive use of clausal nominalization is found in Bhojpuri exhibited in
attributive phrases, complementation, relative clauses, and independent utterances, as
well as the use of derivational nominalization. Different functional dimensions of
Bhojpuri nominalization is discussed below:
(i) Attributive phrases
Attributive phrases in Bhojpuri are formed with the process of nominalization,
as in (24).
(24) मूदा) लोग से आस मत कर ।
murdɑ loɡ se ɑs mʌt kʌr
dead people ABL hope NEG do.IMP
'Don't hope from the dead people.'
