ʌd ̤ urɑ ɡyɑn beijjʌt-o kʌr-ɑ de-lɑ
incomplete knowledge insult-EMPH do-CAUS give-3SG.PRES
'Incomplete knowledge causes to be insulted, too.'
In (19), hान /ɡyɑn/ 'knowledge' is modified by अधूरा /ʌd ̤ urɑ/ 'incomplete' as
well as it has stood as the third person singular agent to cause someone to be insulted,
as a prototype NP does in a finite clause.
(iii) Loss of tense-aspect-modal morphology
Once a verb in Bhojpuri is nominalized, it loses the tense-aspect-modal morphology.
(20) a. Finite clause
हमनी कमात रहj ।
ɦʌmni kʌm ɑt rʌɦĩ
ɦʌm-ni kʌmɑ-ʌt rʌɦ-ĩ
1SG.NOM-PL work-IMPF live-PST.H
'We were working.' (02.109)
b. Nominalized clause
काम जे हमनी करत रहj ...
kɑm je ɦʌmni kʌrʌt rʌɦĩ
kɑm je ɦʌm-ni kʌr-ʌt rʌɦ-ĩ
work SUB 1SG.NOM-PL do-IMPF live-PST.H
'The work we were doing...'
The finite verb कमात रहj /kʌmɑt rʌɦĩ/ 'were woking' in (20a) carries the
aspectual (durative and imperfective in sequence) morphemes followed by the past
tense copula whereas the same finite verb nominalized in (20b) loses all the tense-
aspect markers. Thus, the nominalized clause in Bhojpuri replaces the tense-aspect-
modal markers.
(iv) Loss of pronominal agreement morphology
When the finite verb in Bhojpuri is nominalized, it loses the pronominal
agreement morphology as shown in (21a-b).
(21) a. Finite clause
ऊ िबलाई खोजता ।
u bilɑi kʰojʌtɑ
